Sodium Hyaluronate

INCI NAME: Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt form of Hyaluronic Acid (hyaluronan) — a naturally occurring sugar polymer in skin that functions as a water-binding reservoir. In formulas, it acts primarily as a high-performance humectant: it attracts water and helps keep it within the upper layers of the skin so the surface looks smoother and feels more elastic.

Compared with “Hyaluronic Acid” listed as such, Sodium Hyaluronate is often used because it is more stable in water-based systems and can be manufactured in different molecular weights. Smaller forms are frequently described as having better skin feel and potentially sitting less on the surface, while larger forms excel at instant cushioning and slip. In practice, many premium serums combine multiple weights to deliver both immediate plumping and longer-lasting comfort.

Hydration is not only about adding water — it is about managing water balance. Sodium Hyaluronate supports that balance by improving how the stratum corneum holds onto moisture, which can reduce the look of dehydration lines and make skin appear fresher and more luminous.

Because humectants can pull water toward the surface, performance is best when you “seal” the hydration with a moisturizer (emollients/occlusives). That layered approach is why Sodium Hyaluronate appears so often in luxury routines: it boosts the sensory and visible payoff of the products applied after it.

Sodium Hyaluronate benefits:

  • Boosts surface hydration for a plumper look
  • Softens the appearance of dehydration lines
  • Improves slip and “bouncy” skin feel
  • Supports a healthier-looking skin barrier
  • Enhances radiance by relieving surface tightness

Sodium Hyaluronate is best for:

  • Dehydrated skin (tight, dull, papery feel)
  • Dry and mature skin needing plumping hydration
  • Sensitive or reactive skin seeking low-irritation hydration
  • Oily/combination skin that wants lightweight moisture
  • Post-treatment routines focused on comfort (non-acid days)

Aliased with:

  • Sodium Hyaluronate
  • Hyaluronic Acid Salt
  • Hyaluronan
  • HA

Cautions:

Sodium Hyaluronate is generally well tolerated, including for sensitive skin. If you are very dry or in a low-humidity climate, apply it on lightly damp skin and follow with a moisturizer to prevent the surface from feeling tight.

If irritation occurs, it is usually due to the full formula (preservatives, fragrance, acids) rather than Sodium Hyaluronate itself. Patch test if you are highly reactive or using multiple active products.
