Glycerin

INCI NAME: Glycerin

Glycerin is a skin‑identical humectant: it binds water and helps keep the outer layer of skin comfortably hydrated. Because it’s hygroscopic, it attracts moisture to the stratum corneum and supports the skin’s own Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), which is central to a supple, healthy barrier.

In formulas, glycerin also improves how other emollients and occlusives perform by keeping water where it’s needed, helping reduce the feeling of tightness and surface flaking. It’s widely tolerated, works across most climates, and is especially effective in barrier‑support routines when paired with lipids (ceramides/fatty acids) and gentle cleansing.

Glycerin benefits:

  • Deep, comfortable hydration
  • Supports a healthy skin barrier
  • Helps soften rough texture
  • Reduces visible flakiness from dryness
  • Improves overall skin suppleness

Glycerin is best for:

  • All skin types, including sensitive skin
  • Dehydrated or tight-feeling skin
  • Dry or compromised barrier
  • Use alongside actives to improve comfort

Aliased with:

  • Glycerin
  • Glycerol
  • Glycerine
  • Vegetable Glycerin

Cautions:

Glycerin is generally well tolerated. Very high‑glycerin formulas can feel tacky for some; layering a lightweight moisturizer over it can improve feel.

If skin is cracked or severely irritated, introduce any new product gradually and stop if persistent stinging or redness occurs.
